The two documented foil routes
| Route | Requirement | Official wording supports |
|---|---|---|
| Cereal box | Find one in trash, or buy one from Jenny after every stat is maxed | A box can contain a super-rare foil card. |
| Card Level Up | Exchange three copies of the same card at the same Quality | The higher-Quality result can be foil. |
The August 22 update made Nyanchi Crunchi boxes more common and set Jenny’s late-game box price to $10,000. The August 27 update then documented the binder Level Up route. Neither announcement calls its route guaranteed or publishes a percentage.
Can you guarantee a KOTAMON foil card?
No official KOTAMON source documents a guaranteed foil result, a pity counter, or fixed odds. A current Steam Guide with “guarantee” in its title actually describes a save-and-reload reroll: make a manual save before opening a cereal box bought from Jenny, then reload if the result is not useful.
Treat that as a community save technique, not an official foil mechanic. The guide was updated to use a shop-bought box after commenters reported that boxes found in a trash pile could disappear after reloading. Preserve the full save folder first, keep an untouched manual slot, and do not overwrite it with the unwanted result.
What counts as a full foil set?
Steam gives only two short requirements: A True Fan asks for “a full set of foil cards,” while The Collector asks for “all foil cards.” That contrast suggests one complete color set for A True Fan, but Steam does not name a color, list the cards, or state whether Kotalion counts.
Current players give conflicting answers involving one faction, five-star quality, and every card. None is a developer definition. Treat a visibly foil copy, its color set, and its quality as separate facts.
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Is one color set enough? | A reasonable interpretation of the wording, but not officially defined. |
| Does Kotalion count? | Not stated publicly. |
| Is five-star quality a foil? | Do not use quality alone; wait for visible foil identification. |
| Does every base card have a foil? | No complete public foil checklist is available. |
What is the KOTAMON foil drop rate?
The developer has not published a Foil probability for cereal boxes or Level Up, and has not said which route has better odds. A current 100% completion discussion describes Foil RNG as a late-game grind, but that player experience is not a percentage, pity counter, or guarantee.
No official page reviewed on 5 September 2026 provides a complete foil name list or a rule saying every standard card has a foil version. The database therefore does not publish invented percentages or label every card as foil-eligible.
A practical foil workflow
- Choose one 10-card color set as the first working queue.
- Open cereal boxes during ordinary collection runs and through Jenny’s late-game route.
- Before selling duplicates, look for a yellow border and upward arrow on a card with three same-Quality copies.
- Press the green Level Up button and inspect the higher-Quality result.
- When either route visibly produces a foil, mark only that matching entry.
- Keep base-set, Quality, and foil marks separate, then use Steam's A True Fan or The Collector unlock as the completion signal.
Foil and value are separate
Foil status is a special variant. Quality and physical condition also affect card value according to the official store description. Avoid treating rarity, foil, and condition as the same field.
Full foil set FAQ
What is the KOTAMON foil drop rate?
The developer has not published a probability for cereal-box foils or card Level Up foils, and has not said which route has better odds.
Can you guarantee a foil card in KOTAMON?
No official guaranteed foil mechanic is documented. A current Steam Guide describes saving before opening a shop-bought cereal box and reloading an unwanted result; that is a community reroll method, not a published guarantee or drop rate.
What does a full foil set mean in KOTAMON?
Steam does not publish a precise definition. Its separate “all foil cards” achievement makes one complete color set a reasonable working interpretation, but the unlock notification remains the final answer.
Is five-star quality the same as a foil card?
Do not assume so. Current players give conflicting explanations, while the official store describes foil cards as a special cereal-box find. Track visible foil status separately from copy quality.
Can a KOTAMON card upgrade give a foil?
Yes. The official August 27 update says a three-copy Level Up can produce a foil, but it does not publish odds or guarantee the result.
Does Kotalion count for A True Fan?
The public achievement description does not state whether Kotalion belongs to the full-foil-set counter.
Does every KOTAMON card have a foil version?
No official card-by-card foil checklist has been published, so the site records only foil copies a player personally observes.
